Each day you need a variety of foods. Each person’s daily calories and nutritional needs are different. A meal plan that is balanced with the proper nutrients will help to stabilize blood glucose levels. When blood glucose levels become stabilized, the results are a greater flow of energy throughout the day, better utilization of calories preventing the storage of extra calories as fat. It is most important to combine your carbohydrates with protein and fat to utilize energy efficiently.

Until the blood glucose levels become balanced and the cells become nutrient-dense, the body will remain in a starvation mode and store extra calories as fat, thus the difficulty in shedding unwanted pounds. The more you diet, the worse the situation becomes.

To keep the blood sugar levels balanced, here are some nutritional tips to keep in mind when planning meals: Eat three balanced meals a day following the glycemic index.
  • Eat at least two balanced snacks per day following the glycemic index.
  • A third snack may be necessary at 8:00 pm for those person who stay up past 10:00 pm.
  • Avoid eating past 8:00 pm whenever possible; water is okay.
  • Eating smaller meals throughout the day is easier on your body than eating a few big meals. (Remember the goal is to keep your blood sugar level balanced throughout the day).
  • Drink a minimum of 8 (8 oz.) glasses of filtered or bottled water per day. Adding fresh lemon or lime juice helps to make the water palatable, aids in flushing out the lymphatic system and helps to detoxify the body. It is most helpful to those persons who experience aches and pains or arthritis.
  • The most important factor to remember is to include both protein and carbohydrates at each meal, including your snacks. The reason is the protein will pull the glucose out of the bloodstream after eating, preventing your blood glucose levels and insulin levels from peaking and dropping.
  • Good sources of animal protein include: very lean meats, skinless chicken, turkey, fish, egg or egg substitutes, red meat in smaller quantities and low-fat cheeses, milk and yogurts.
  • Good sources of vegetable protein include: soybean products, vegetable protein, beans and rice, whole wheat of artichoke pastas, whole grain breaks and cereals, brown rice, beans, legumes, dark leafy vegetables, sprouts, seeds and nuts.
